About Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia surgery directly addresses gynecomastia, or excess or enlarged male breast tissue. Gynecomastia is a common condition that affects up to 70% of adolescent boys. (1) This condition primarily stems from hormonal imbalances, but it can also arise through adolescence, old age, steroid use, medical conditions, or as a side effect of medication. (2) While some men find that their gynecomastia resolves on its own, many find that theirs persists, leading them to seek surgical resolutions.

Benefits

Gynecomastia surgery offers several important benefits, including:

  • More Masculine Chest: Your surgeon can perform gynecomastia surgery to restore a flatter, smoother, and more contoured chest that aligns with masculine beauty standards.
  • Improved Proportions: Removing any bulging or enlarged tissue can restore a more balanced appearance to your breasts and contribute to a more attractive figure.
  • Elevated Self-Esteem: Gynecomastia surgery can help you feel more positive about yourself and your appearance, especially when going shirtless to the beach or pool.
  • Tailored Solutions: Our surgical team will select the most appropriate surgical techniques and approaches for your unique needs to ensure results that suit your natural frame and figure.
  • Lasting Results: You can enjoy the results of your gynecomastia procedure for several years, especially with a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.

Candidates

You may be a suitable candidate for this procedure if you have enlarged or overdeveloped breast tissue that has not responded to lifestyle changes or medications.

To qualify, you should maintain good general health and hold realistic expectations regarding your final results. You should also be nonsmoking or willing to quit using nicotine for an extensive period. Our surgical team will determine your candidacy during your personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

To ensure a truly personalized experience, we ask that you attend a personal consultation before scheduling your gynecomastia procedure. During this consultation, your surgeon will meet with you to get to know you more personally and create a one-of-a-kind solution for your goals. They will converse with you openly about your medical history, personal concerns, and desired outcomes. They will also assess your chest to evaluate your natural breast composition and anatomy.

Your surgeon will use this information to determine the best approach for treating your gynecomastia. Options include liposuction or surgical excision, and they may recommend integrating additional therapies into your treatment plan.

If you are ready to start transforming the appearance of your chest, please schedule a consultation online. You may also call (913) 663-3838 to reach our Kansas City, Leawood, or Lee’s Summit offices.

Preparation

After scheduling your gynecomastia procedure, you will need to make certain preparations to ensure you are ready. To help, your surgeon will provide you with a set of pre-operative guidelines. They may direct you to:

  • Avoid any medications or supplements that may thin your blood.
  • Refrain from any nicotine use or alcohol consumption in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
  • Prepare transportation to and from the procedure.
  • Request time away from work and any other commitments you may have.
  • Fill any prescriptions ahead of time.

Gynecomastia Procedure

Your surgeon will perform your gynecomastia procedure in our surgical center. The duration of your procedure will vary depending on the details of your treatment plan, but you can expect it to last between 1 and 3 hours. Your gynecomastia procedure will begin with your surgeon cleansing your skin. You will receive the appropriate anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable. From there, your surgeon will resculpt your chest using surgical excision and, in some cases, liposuction, depending on your anatomy.

To remove glandular tissue, your surgeon will use surgical excision techniques. They will place a small incision, usually on the underside of the areola, to access the underlying structures of your chest. From there, they will begin to remove excess tissue from your breasts to create a flatter, smoother, and more masculine look.

Your surgeon may recommend incorporating liposuction techniques if breast tissue enlargement is in part caused by excessive fatty tissue. (3) After injecting a tumescent fluid, your surgeon will insert a thin cannula through the incision or through small incisions in the lateral chest and move it back and forth to break down your fat before aspirating it from the body. Liposuction techniques will likely be performed before any skin removal for more precise results.

Recovery

After your procedure, you will need to take time away from work and social commitments to focus on your recovery. You may return to light activities and desk work after resting for approximately one to two weeks. However, you will need to refrain from performing any strenuous or demanding tasks until your surgeon clears you to return.

As you heal, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness near the procedure areas. These effects will gradually dissipate over time. You will also need to wear a compression garment around your chest. This specialized garment will diminish any further swelling and help maintain your new contours.

Your surgeon and nurse team will give you a detailed set of post-operative instructions to help you navigate your recovery. By following each one, you can ensure a smooth recovery and the best possible results.

Results

You will be able to notice an immediate difference in the shape of your chest, but the full results of your gynecomastia procedure will become more apparent once you recover.

You will be able to enjoy the appearance of a flatter, smoother, more sculpted, and masculine-looking chest—each of which can contribute to a more proportionate and attractive appearance overall. Removing your excess chest tissue can also reduce any potential skin irritation or discomfort caused by chafing.

The results of gynecomastia surgery are long-lasting, with effects that you can enjoy for years to come. To preserve your results, you will need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stable weight, as fluctuations may affect your long-term appearance.

FAQ

What causes gynecomastia to develop in male patients?

Gynecomastia is primarily associated with hormonal imbalances, but the precise cause is often difficult to pinpoint. Gynecomastia has been said to be linked to genetics, steroid use, medical conditions, or as a side effect of medications. Some patients are able to see improvements in their condition after addressing a hormonal imbalance or adjusting their medication; for patients who are unable to see significant improvements with lifestyle changes, surgical intervention is often the best option for impactful results.

How will I know if I am a better candidate for liposuction or surgical excision?

During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your breasts to determine if they are primarily composed of fatty tissues or glandular tissues. If they are primarily fatty, your surgeon will likely recommend liposuction. On the other hand, if your breasts are more glandular, they may elect for surgery.

After my gynecomastia procedure, how long will it take for me to return to my routine?

Most of our patients can return to most of their daily activities after resting for one to two weeks. However, you will have to wait for several more weeks before returning to more demanding or strenuous activities.

How long will the results of my gynecomastia treatment last?

The results of gynecomastia will last for several years, especially when paired with a stable weight and healthy lifestyle habits.

Can my gynecomastia resolve on its own?

In some cases, gynecomastia may resolve on its own, but gynecomastia that persists into adulthood may require intervention in order for patients to see improvements.
