About Skincare Treatments
The skin is the largest organ in the body by both surface area and weight. (1) As people age, their levels of elastin and collagen decline, two vital components in maintaining the skin’s elasticity, structure, and overall quality. This natural depletion can lead to the development of wrinkles, creases, and fine lines, which can all affect one’s appearance. Additionally, external factors such as smoking, sun exposure, and more can further alter the appearance of a patient’s skin, with UV exposure responsible for 80% of facial aging. (2) Our range of skincare products is designed to help patients rejuvenate their skin, restoring and maintaining a radiant, youthful-looking glow.

Skincare Products

There is a wide range of skincare products on the market, each with unique purposes and ingredients that can enhance the health and appearance of one’s skin. A few of the primary ingredients in a routine include a cleanser, exfoliator, toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Cleansers
Cleansing the skin is the first step in a skincare routine and is performed to remove dirt, residue, and other particles from the face. A good cleanser can help prevent breakouts and clogged pores, as well as ensure the other products in the skincare routine can be effectively absorbed.
Exfoliation
Exfoliation helps clear away dead cells from the skin’s surface to promote healthy cell turnover and can be done physically or chemically. Physical exfoliants use a manual method to promote turnover, with products often containing small granules or particles to help gently scrub the face. Chemical exfoliants use acids or enzymes to dissolve the bonds of dead skin cells, clearing them on a cellular level. This step in the skincare routine helps address uneven texturing and clogged pores, but should only be performed a few times each week to prevent irritation.
Toners
Toners are applied after the skin is cleansed and are designed to rebalance the pH of the skin. They are water-based products that help hydrate the skin and prepare it for better absorption of other products. Different toners vary in their formula, with many offering different benefits, such as brightening, hydration boosting, acne clearing, and more.
Moisturizers
Moisturizer helps hydrate the skin and enhance the skin’s barrier. A lack of moisture in the skin can cause it to produce more oil as compensation, leading to breakouts. On the other hand, many patients also experience flaking, dryness, or redness if their skin is not properly moisturized. Moisturizers can be categorized differently based on their purpose. They typically contain one or more of three types of ingredients, each serving a specific function: (3)
- Humectants: Humectant moisturizers attract and draw water from deeper layers of the skin to enhance hydration levels.
- Emollients: Emollients protect and fill microscopic gaps on the skin’s surface, keeping out irritants that could lead to inflammation.
- Occlusives: Occlusive moisturizers form a barrier around the outer layer of skin to prevent water loss and protect the skin. These moisturizers often contain lipids such as plant-based oils, waxes, or other occlusive agents to seal in moisture.
Moisturizing is an essential step in any skincare routine. A good moisturizer can be key to clear and healthy skin.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is a product that helps prevent UV damage. While many patients may think of it as a product that simply prevents sunburns, it also prevents sunspots and hyperpigmentation while preventing the development of visual signs of aging, including wrinkles or fine lines. There are two types of sunscreen:
- Mineral Sunscreen: Mineral sunscreen uses minerals such as zinc oxide to reflect UV rays or absorb them as heat. These are designed to provide immediate protection but often provide a white sheen on the skin.
- Chemical Sunscreen: Chemical sunscreen uses organic compounds that absorb UV rays, offering protection without leaving a visible residue. However, they may irritate sensitive skin. (4)
Many lightweight sunscreens can be layered under makeup and easily reapplied throughout the day. Incorporating sunscreen into a skincare regimen prevents premature aging and unnecessary damage.
Common Skincare Ingredients
Each skincare product contains a wide assortment of ingredients that enhance one’s skin, but a few stand out for the benefits they offer. When shopping for skincare products, a few key ingredients to look out for include:
- Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a deeply hydrating substance that helps draw in and preserve moisture. When applied topically, HA can help promote skin healing, alleviate feelings of burning, itching, and pain, and hydrate the skin, restoring a radiant and plump appearance. When the skin is not properly hydrated, it can either start to dry and flake or produce more oil, leading to breakouts. (5)
- Niacinamide: Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that helps enhance the production of lipids and fats that help enhance the skin’s outer barrier. This vitamin can be used to address acne, aging skin, discoloration, and more. Niacinamide helps regulate cell metabolism and regeneration and is commonly used as an anti-aging ingredient. (6)
- Retinol: Retinol is a form of vitamin A and is an active ingredient used to influence different cellular processes, such as cellular growth, cell turnover, collagen synthesis, and to reduce the overproduction of oil. Additionally, retinol can help significantly reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles with regular use. (7)
- Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is a type of beta-hydroxy acid that penetrates the skin’s surface to help break down excess oils and debris, specifically within the pores. (8) Hydroxy acids are a class of chemical compounds that are known for their exfoliating properties and can enhance the skin’s appearance on a cellular level. When applied topically, salicylic acid can help clear away the bonds holding dead skin cells and reduce inflammation, leading to overall clearer skin.
- Glycolic Acid: Glycolic acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid that can help soften and reduce the appearance of acne, acne scarring, melasma, hyperpigmentation, photoaging, and more. Alpha hydroxy acids are water-soluble, while beta hydroxy acids are oil-soluble. Glycolic acid can be used to help exfoliate the outer layer of the skin while also providing anti-inflammatory properties. Glycolic acid is often used in chemical peels and ranges in strength to help address a wide range of skin concerns.
- Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a necessary ingredient for skin health and can be applied to the skin to increase its brightness, reduce pigmentation and uneven skin tone, and enhance the overall health of the skin. Lowered vitamin C levels are associated with aged and photodamaged skin and poor wound healing. (9) Vitamin C is a common ingredient found in different products like serums and scrubs, and can easily be added to one’s skin routine for significant results.
- Peptides: Peptides are short amino acid chains that can be used to enhance overall health and can address a wide range of concerns, such as skin quality, wound healing, visual aging, and more. Peptides stimulate certain biological responses in the body and are often found in anti-aging products such as moisturizers, creams, or serums.
Choosing ingredients that complement your skin will make a significant difference when trying to clear a breakout or inflammation. Our specialists can help patients find the best products for them during a consultation.

While certain benefits are quick to manifest, the most noticeable improvements tend to occur after consistent use over several weeks.
Are there any risks to using skincare products?
Some patients may experience allergic reactions or irritation to certain ingredients. It is recommended to always patch-test new products and seek advice if you are experiencing abnormal effects.
