Skin Type Classifications
Q. How are skin types classified?
A. The Fitzpatrick classification is based on sun-reaction and color of skin, and it is important when individualizing treatments for 6 different skin types:
Type I-is white and always burns.
Type II-is white and usually burns, but tans with difficulty.
Type III-is white and sometimes mildly burns, but tans an average amount.
Type IV-is moderate brown and vary rarely burns; tans easily.
Type V-is dark brown and vary rarely burns; tans easily.
Type VI-is black and never burns; tans easily.
Skin of Asian, Indian, Hispanic or light African descent would likely be considered Type V.
