Free Radicals

Q. I've heard much about how the aging process can be caused by free radical damage. What are free radicals?

A. They are molecules (usually oxygen) that have unpaired electrons. Normally molecules have electrons paired with protons for an even-balanced charge. As the free radicals try to find a mate for the unpaired electron, they create a destructive process at the cellular level which can result in collagen fiber breakdown and skin cell DNA damage.

Q. So what causes free radicals?

A. Our own body's metabolism, pollution, cigarette smoke, exposure to ultraviolet rays (tanning) and the like. Aging, pollutants and toxins can all cause undesirable free radicals.

Q. What can you do to prevent free radicals?

A.
  1. Eat properly.
  2. Drink lots of water.
  3. Get plenty of sleep.
  4. Drink alcohol only in moderation
  5. Limit smoking and smoke-filled environments
  6. Use topical and oral antioxidants
  7. Use barrier protection against pollution and ultraviolet rays
The use of certain skin care products can be of great help for these last two points.

Q. What is the best topiocal antioxidant available?

A. By far it is L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C). It dramatically outperforms all others and has been proven most effective time and again.
