  • Type I-is white and always burns
  • Type II-is white and usually burns, but tans with difficulty
  • Type III-is white and sometimes mildly burns, but tans an average amount
  • Type IV-is moderate brown and vary rarely burns; tans easily
  • Type V-is dark brown and vary rarely burns; tans easily
  • Type VI-is black and never burns; tans easily
  • Skin of Asian, Indian, Hispanic or light African descent would likely be considered Type V
