Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I've heard a lot about laser hair reduction lately. What can you tell me about it and does it really work?
A. Unwanted hair has traditionally been removed by waxing, shaving, plucking, electrolysis or use of chemical creams, but all usually produce temporary results. Laser, however, can produce permanent hair reduction.
The beam of light generated by the laser is specifically designed to be absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The darker the hair, the better the absorption. As the laser light is absorbed, energy is transferred to the hair follicle, damaging it. Each hair grows in a cycle, with a new one being "born" in the follicle after the old one falls out or is removed. The laser leads to permanent elimination of hair growth from the follicle if it happens to be in the vulnerable phase of its growth cycle. Multiple treatments (3 on average) will be needed to achieve permanent hair reduction, since all hair follicles are in different phases of their growth cycle at any given time, and therefore become vulnerable at different times. Periodic maintenance treatments are often helpful as well.
